Overview
For students considering a career in speech-language pathology or audiology, this undergraduate major provides the scientific foundation upon which subsequent graduate academic or clinical training is appropriately based.
A professional career in speech-language pathology or audiology requires graduate study (a two-year master's program) in an accredited program and completion of a clinical fellowship year.
Speech-language pathology and audiology are diverse fields with many opportunities to work in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, universities, research institutes, industry, and private practice, and with a variety of populations ranging from infant to elderly.
An undergraduate major in communication science is also appropriate for graduate work in the neurosciences, speech and hearing sciences, health related professions (including dentistry, medicine, and physician assistant studies) as well as graduate work in a range of education specializations, e.g. special education, education of the deaf and hard of hearing, and early intervention.
The Pitt Freshman Guarantee
Entering freshmen may qualify for a guarantee into the graduate programs in speech-language pathology and audiology. Qualifying students will meet the following criteria: SAT scores of 1300 or an ACT test result of 29 or better. Guaranteed students must maintain a QPA of 3.3 or better and meet all admission requirements. For consideration, indicate an intended field of study in Pre-communication Science on your application when applying to Pitt as a freshman (at regional Pitt campuses, choose corresponding codes).
Early Review
Students enrolled in the communication science and disorders undergraduate program at the University of Pittsburgh may qualify for an early review and decision process for admission into the graduate programs in speech-language pathology (MA/MS) and audiology (AuD).Eligible students must have a minimum overall undergraduate QPA of 3.3, minimum QPA of 3.5 in the major courses, and must meet all other admission criteria for the graduate programs.
