Information technology advances at a breakneck pace, and part of our job is to make sure we use it appropriately and effectively to improve patient care and outcomes.

Needs Assessment Study of Pittsburgh Residents Disabled from Intentional Street Violence

Researchers investigate how the growing population of minority individuals with disabilities resulting from intentional street violence can receive appropriate rehabilitation, education, and social services.

Transcoding Technology and Web Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities and for Mobile Users

This research seeks to develop an advanced transcoding system capable of transforming any Web contents into accessible presentations for visually impaired users and for various presentations ranging from PDA users, as well as transforming Web to voice.

OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) and Data Mining for Biomedical and Healthcare Applications

The objectives of this research are twofold: to develop data warehousing and data mining systems for various applications in biomedical research and health care. The research has two lines of applications: community health assessment and clinical drug use.

Personal and New Generation Health Record

This research seeks to develop a health record with the following characteristics: Web-based, dynamic record; capable of supporting synchronous and asynchronous communications between providers and patients; longitudinal; multimedia; and enriched by the widespread use of pervasive computing such as wearable health monitoring devices.

Automated Coding Software: Development and Use to Enhance Antifraud Activities

Researchers are working to improve automated coding systems that will detect improper coding. This research identifies components of the coding process that have the potential to minimize fraud and recommends best practices to software developers.

Researchers are creating, testing, and evaluating online courses on electronic health records (EHR), with an emphasis on health and rehabilitation providers.

Effective and Efficient Public Health Reporting Using ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS

Researchers investigate and measure the effectiveness of the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding system for capturing and recording relevant public health information, including diseases and related procedures.
