Bernard Rousseau, PhD, MMHC, CCC-SLP, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Fellow, is the SHRS Associate Dean for Equity, Inclusion and Community Engagement, and professor and chair of the Department of Communication Science and Disorders. Dr. Rousseau is a fellow of the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and an Associate Fellow of the American Laryngological Association.

After receiving his undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Central Florida, Dr. Rousseau received his Ph.D. in communicative disorders from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a second master’s degree in management of health care (MMHC) from Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management.

Dr. Rousseau has over 17 years of experience actively engaged in academic and clinical translation in voice disorders. He has held continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for more than 14 consecutive years as principal investigator. He has more than 6 years of experience in higher education administration and leading large teams and departments (as associate vice chair, chair, associate dean). Dr. Rousseau has trained over 60 research trainees in various capacities in his federally funded laboratory (undergraduate, graduate, predoctoral, postdoctoral), including 10 postdoctoral fellows and 4 predoctoral fellows who have successfully transitioned into academic clinical, research, and teaching careers.

As professor and chair of the Department of Communication Science and Disorders in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Rousseau serves as mentor to over 20 FTE faculty including 7 full professors, 6 associate professors, 6 assistant professors, and 1 research assistant professor. The department ranks among the top in the nation in Speech Language Pathology (#3 USNWR) and Audiology (#7 USNWR) and #1 in the state of Pennsylvania.

In addition to his department leadership role, Dr. Rousseau serves as the associate dean for equity, inclusion, and community engagement in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. As associate dean, Dr. Rousseau is responsible for developing and overseeing a comprehensive program that provides leadership, guidance, and support to promote increased recruitment, retention and advancement of underrepresented minority faculty, staff and students in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. This includes oversight over all the school's diversity, equity, and inclusion activities as they relate to faculty, trainees, students, and staff, and the development of strategic partnerships across the Schools of Health Sciences and surrounding communities in the Commonwealth. Dr. Rousseau's school-wide leadership responsibilities include a major role in strengthening engagement with the University of Pittsburgh Community Engagement Centers, SHRS Wellness Pavilion, and the Pittsburgh Public Schools. The goal of these community engagement partnerships is to increase access and the creation of pathways to the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences programs, research laboratories and world renowned clinical and research faculty.

Dr. Rousseau’s contributions to the professions include service on committees charged with the development of practice policy documents and service as a site visitor for The Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology & Speech Language Pathology. He has served on the coordinating committee of ASHA SIG 3, editor of Perspectives on Voice and Voice Disorders, co-chair of the SIG3 Research Committee, and Chair of the ASHA Committee on Honors. Dr. Rousseau has served a 6-year term as charter member of the Motor Function, Speech & Rehabilitation Study Section (NIH) and currently serves as a trustee on the American Speech Language Hearing Foundation Board of Trustees.
