Md Rayhan Afsar is a mechanical engineer and research scientist for the Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology. He serves as the Director of Engineering in a collaborative, multi-school, and multi-department initiative named Healthy Home Laboratory to design, develop, evaluate and translate assistive technologies for aging (AT-A) with an emphasis on supporting individuals to age in place. Afsar received his PhD in mechanical engineering from The University of Alabama in 2021. His research focuses on assistive and rehabilitation robotics, specifically robotic power assistive devices for stair ascent and descent, robotic lower-limb prostheses/orthoses, legged/wheeled robotic platforms, and human-robot interaction for assistive and rehabilitation purposes. Prior to working at the University of Alabama’s Human-Centered Bio-Robotics Laboratory as a graduate research assistant, he was an instructor in the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), Bangladesh, where he taught several courses on mechanical and aerospace design.
