Clinical Education
We want to make sure our graduates are well prepared to enter the workforce, so we complement our didactic education program with a clinical program that includes 92 weeks of clinical internships.
Understanding physical therapy education at Pitt would not be complete without including the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) integrated health system, which is affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences. UPMC is the leading integrated healthcare delivery system in western Pennsylvania, meeting the region’s comprehensive healthcare needs through a network of UPMC hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home and community based services, and ambulatory care.
Within UPMC is the UPMC Rehabilitation Network, including the Centers for Rehab Services, which offers physical, occupational, speech, and specialized therapies and industrial rehabilitation at more than 50 sites in western Pennsylvania.
UPMC has demonstrated its support to the Department of Physical Therapy by offering students from the physical therapy program at the University of Pittsburgh highest priority for all learning experiences, including student affiliations and one-year affiliations, within its rehabilitation network. UPMC has further offered to pay stipends on the order of one-third the rate of an entry-level salary during the one-year, full-time internship that is the culminating experience of the entry-level professional educational program.
