The Dr. Freddie Fu Athletic Training Scholarship


Dr. Freddie H. Fu has been instrumental in the development and success of the Athletic Training/Sports Medicine program. Several years ago, Dr. Fu endowed a scholarship to be awarded to worthy students pursuing a career in athletic training. First awarded in 2000, this scholarship recognizes four students who demonstrate outstanding academic and clinical excellence as well as involvement in activities outside the athletic training program that bring credit to oneself, the University and the profession of athletic training.

  • Applicants must be enrolled in the Athletic Training Education Program at the University of Pittsburgh.
  • Applications will be posted after Spring Recess.

Tim Kerin Memorial Scholarship


The Tim Kerin Memorial Scholarship has been established in cooperation with the Department of Athletics, the Athletic Education Program at the University of Pittsburgh and the Optimist Club of Wilmerding, PA to assist worthy students in obtaining an undergraduate degree in athletic training. Tim Kerin was a dedicated athletic trainer who worked at the University of Pittsburgh as Head Athletic Trainer from 1970-1976.

  • Eligible applicants must be a senior undergraduate student, in good academic standing, enrolled in the Athletic Training Education Program.
  • The scholarship is awarded on the basis of school and community activities, leadership, citizenship and scholarship.
  • Applicants applying for the award should exhibit characteristics that support the legacy of Tim Kerin.
  • Applications will be posted sometime during the first part of the fall semester.

Jill Conley Memorial Award


The Jill Conley Memorial Fund was established in 2014 to pay tribute to our former faculty member and the athletic trainer for Pitt Women’s Basketball from 2000-2010. The Jill Conley Memorial Fund was developed via a partnership between the Department of Sports Medicine/Nutrition and the Department of Athletics at the University of Pittsburgh.

David H. Perrin Student Award


The David H. Perrin Student Award is presented to a graduate or undergraduate student from the Athletic Training or Sports Medicine programs. The award shall be applied to expenses associated with the student’s academic program.

Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society, Inc.


The Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society, Inc. presents multiple scholarships annually to honor students from the membership of P.A.T.S., Inc.

  • Applicants must be nominated by a certified or certified-retired member of P.A.T.S., Inc (each certified member can nominate no more than one candidate for this award.
  • Applicants must be a student member of P.A.T.S., Inc. for a minimum of six months prior to the application deadline, be enrolled in an accredited curriculum program and signify an intention to pursue a career in athletic training. Finally, applicants must demonstrate conduct, both on and off the field, in a manner which brings credit to oneself, their institution and/or intercollegiate athletics and higher education. P.A.T.S., Inc., will present four awards annually in the amount of $2,000 each.

Phillip Donley Scholarship Award


The Phillip B. Donley award seeks to distinguish the student who is also dedicated to the profession – who not only distinguishes themselves academically, but more importantly clinically and through volunteerism. It is the student is well-rounded and who has shown themselves to go the “extra mile” – not just what has been assigned to them throughout their curriculum.

Richard M. Burkholder Scholarship Award


Richard Burkholder is an untiring servant of the profession and the athletes he serves. The Richard M. Burkholder Scholarship Award is awarded to a student who has a desire and eagerness to gain knowledge not only in the classroom, but also through observation skills – and has insight of how these skills and knowledge can be used to evaluate early health problems and apply them to treat the athlete and use them in practicing his or her chosen health profession. Like Burke, the person awarded this Scholarship should have a great sense of humor and be committed to helping others in the profession.

NATA Research and Education Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship


  • The National Athletic Trainers’ Association provides a number of scholarships to eligible students on the basis of academic and clinical excellence as well as participation in campus and community activities that demonstrate qualities of leadership and service.
  • Applicants must be student members of the NATA by November 1 of the year preceding submission of the application, be enrolled in an accredited curriculum program and intend to pursue the profession of athletic training as their means of livelihood and have a minimum GPA of 3.2 or higher.
  • Completed applications must include a statement of support by a certified athletic trainer and verification of academic standing.

Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association – Professional Scholarship for Entry-Level Athletic Training Students


The Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association, Inc. has inaugurated a scholarship program honoring outstanding students from the EATA membership who have excelled academically and clinically as entry-level athletic training students. At present, ten $2,500.00 grants are awarded annually to students in entry-level accredited curriculum or candidacy programs who have participated with distinction in a college or university athletic training program. Applications with complete information and instructions will be posted on EATA’s web site.

NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women’s Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics


The Ethnic Minority and Women’s Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics programs were developed by the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics and the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The NCAA awards 13 scholarships to ethnic minorities and 13 scholarships to female college graduates who will be entering their initial year of postgraduate studies. The applicant must be seeking admission or have been accepted into a sports administration or related program that will help the applicant obtain a career in intercollegiate athletics, such as athletics administrator, coach, athletic trainer or other career that provides a direct service to intercollegiate athletics. Applicants must have performed with distinction as a student-body member at their undergraduate institution. The applicant’s involvement in extracurricular activities, coursework, commitment to pursuing a career in intercollegiate athletics and promise for success in such a career will be considered.

 

Schoolwide Funding Resources

Matriculated SHRS students at the undergraduate and graduate level have the opportunity to apply for the following scholarships and financial award opportunities. Some awards are offered through the University and others are school-wide.

Merit Scholarship

The merit scholarships comprise three awards administered under a common application process. The purpose of these scholarships is to acknowledge and aid students who demonstrate high-level scholastic achievement and financial need. Multiple scholarships are awarded per year, pending available funds.

The Dr. Timothy C. and Mrs. Cynthia B. Sell Student Award

Donors Dr. Timothy Sell and Mrs. Cynthia Sell have established an endowed fund to promote diversity and inclusion within the SHRS student body. The SHRS Faculty Executive Committee will choose the award recipient(s) in mid-January and the award will be applied to the student’s spring tuition bill. Awards will be presented annually pending receipt of qualifying applications.

Student Resource Funds

The student resource funds comprise two awards administered under a common application process. The purpose of the awards is to provide support for qualified students presenting posters or papers at a conference and intended to cover a portion of travel and/or presentation supply expenses.

    The Pitt Alumni Association manages multiple scholarships that students may be eligible to apply for.
  • Honors College Scholarships
    The University Honors College (UHC) advises undergraduates, seniors and alumni who are interested in pursuing national and international awards. These opportunities both recognize past accomplishments and give students enriching educational experiences beyond the classroom. The UHC provides guidance and support on scholarship, fellowship and grant competitions.
