Emily Abreu is a graduate student in the Speech-Language Pathology program for the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. She is currently a graduate research assistant for Professor Leah Fabiano-Smith's Bilingual Phonology Lab, investigating the phonological development in bilingual Latinx Spanish-English speaking children. This research aims to reduce discrimination against minoritized groups by developing equitable speech and language assessment procedures for bilingual speakers.


Abreu earned her BS in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Florida State University in 2022. Prior to joining the Pitt team, she completed practicums in Bilingual Services and Intellectual Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Service Delivery. She has a passion for identifying best clinical practices and promoting an ethical framework for speech and language therapy services for minoritized groups.
