Benjamin "Ben" Nelson

Biography

Benjamin “Ben” Nelson began his postdoctoral fellowship in May 2026. His mentor is Mark Schmeler, within the SHRS Center for Assistive Technology. He has been given the opportunity to learn and explore a variety of topics within the field of assistive technology and policy, develop and refine research skills, and simultaneously remain involved in clinical work. Getting to know the ins and outs of wheelchairs, identifying real-world problems on a large scale during clinical work, and learning about policy and how to make real change happen has been empowering during his time in his fellowship. Nelson is excited to continue doing work to keep people safe, independent and in their homes, living the way they want to, while finding new ways to ensure policy and service delivery is most efficiently and best serving to all people. Nelson hopes to continue working in both clinical and academic settings after this fellowship, continuing to drive necessary change and innovation.
