Samantha Hauser is an auditory scientist and audiologist whose research aims to improve clinical audiology practice through enhanced diagnostics that reveal the unique pathologies underlying individuals’ hearing complaints. Many patients with normal audiograms still experience significant listening challenges in noisy environments, and two people with similar degrees of hearing loss can have different outcomes with treatments like hearing aids. Hauser directs the Precision Audiology Research Lab, which uses a cross-species approach to identify new methods for hearing loss diagnostics and evaluation as new therapeutics for hearing loss are developed. This approach involves using animal models to map the relationship between anatomical damage and physiologic responses and applying these insights to human patients to better understand individual differences in hearing outcomes and perception. Her work is informed by three years of experience diagnosing and treating hearing loss in people of all ages. In addition to her translational research program, she is interested in audiology education and how students can best prepare for long-term success in clinical practice.
