Biographical Profile

  • Valerie J. M. Watzlaf, PhD, RHIA, FAHIMA is an associate professor within the Department of Health Information Management in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh.  She also holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Health Services Administration in the Graduate School of Public Health.  In those capacities, she teaches and performs research in the areas of health information management, epidemiology, quality improvement,  and statistics.
  • Watzlaf received her Bachelor of Science degree (BS ‘79) in health records administration from the School of Health Related Professions; her Master of Public Health (MPH ‘85) and doctorate (PhD ’90) in epidemiology from the Graduate School of Public Health; all from the University of Pittsburgh. 
  • Watzlaf has worked and consulted in several health care organizations in health information management, long-term care, and epidemiology. 
  • She is very active in professional and scientific societies having served on the Data Quality Task Force of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the chairperson of the Coding, Policy, and Strategy Committee of AHIMA, the Research Committee of AHIMA, the Council on Accreditation of AHIMA and most recently as a board member on the Foundation of Research and Education (FORE) of AHIMA. She is also on the Editorial Advisory Board for the Journal of AHIMA (JAHIMA) and for Perspectives in Health Information Management, a national peer-reviewed online journal within AHIMA. Watzlaf has published extensively in the field of health information management. She received the AHIMA Research Award in October 2001. She also became a fellow of AHIMA in April 2003.  She was nominated for the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1993 and in 1990 was elected to Delta Omega, the national public health honor society. She was recently elected to the AHIMA Board of Directors and her term will run from January 2009 - December 2012.
  • Watzlaf’s research has focused on classification systems, epidemiology and quality of health care, developing standards for the content of the EHR, and developing the EHR for use by health professionals.
