Program-specific Funding Resources

Students have a variety of options to fund their tuition. Some of the most frequently used funding options are included below, but the program encourages applicants and students to consult with the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid when determining the best options available.

  • Scholarships: The program recommends the following sites for external scholarships:
  • Loans: The Federal government provides loan options for graduate students, even if they do not qualify for need-based financial aid. The Pitt Financial Aid Office works with two types of U.S. federal government loans:
    • Federal Direct Loans: This is generally the lowest cost loan available, for up to $20,500 every academic year. Students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, take at least six (6) credits per semester and submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to qualify. Pitt’s school code for the FAFSA is 008815.
    • Federal Graduate PLUS Loans: If students need to borrow more, then a Graduate PLUS loan can generally cover the remainder. Students will need to submit the application for the Federal Direct loan prior to applying for the PLUS.

If federal loans are unavailable or insufficient, the program can help students explore private or alternative education loans. Unlike federal loans, private loans do not require a FAFSA to apply. Private loans are not based on need and approval is generally based on creditworthiness and ability to repay. Some students may need to apply with a credit-worthy co-signer. Interest rates, grace periods, repayment options and fees are determined by the lender and can vary considerably from lender to lender; generally, they charge higher rates than Federal loans.

Schoolwide Funding Resources

Matriculated SHRS students at the undergraduate and graduate level have the opportunity to apply for the following scholarships and financial award opportunities. Some awards are offered through the University and others are school-wide.

Merit Scholarship

The merit scholarships comprise three awards administered under a common application process. The purpose of these scholarships is to acknowledge and aid students who demonstrate high-level scholastic achievement and financial need. Multiple scholarships are awarded per year, pending available funds.

The Dr. Timothy C. and Mrs. Cynthia B. Sell Student Award

Donors Dr. Timothy Sell and Mrs. Cynthia Sell have established an endowed fund to promote diversity and inclusion within the SHRS student body. The SHRS Faculty Executive Committee will choose the award recipient(s) in mid-January and the award will be applied to the student’s spring tuition bill. Awards will be presented annually pending receipt of qualifying applications.

Student Resource Funds

The student resource funds comprise two awards administered under a common application process. The purpose of the awards is to provide support for qualified students presenting posters or papers at a conference and intended to cover a portion of travel and/or presentation supply expenses.

  • Pitt Alumni Association Scholarships
    The Pitt Alumni Association manages multiple scholarships that students may be eligible to apply for.
  • Honors College Scholarships
    The University Honors College (UHC) advises undergraduates, seniors and alumni who are interested in pursuing national and international awards. These opportunities both recognize past accomplishments and give students enriching educational experiences beyond the classroom. The UHC provides guidance and support on scholarship, fellowship and grant competitions.

International Student Financial Information

The Office of International Services (OIS) provides a financial document to inform international graduate students of the financial requirement in order to issue a student visa document (Form I-20 or DS-2019). The document is updated annually.
