The University of Pittsburgh was represented at the 2024 Bárány Society meeting in Uppsala, Sweden, by a talented, interprofessional delegation of faculty and a Fulbright Scholar. They included Department of Physical Therapy Professor Susan Whitney, Assistant Professors Brooke Klatt, Pamela Dunlap and Regan Harrell, Adjunct Faculty Amy Cassidy and Alia Alghwiri, and PhD student and Fulbright Scholar Claudia Costa. Additionally, Joseph Furman, professor in the Pitt School of Medicine Department of Otolaryngology and director of UPMC Center for Balance Disorders, rounded out the delegation.

As a group, the delegation moderated four sessions, delivered five platform presentations and displayed four poster presentations. Another platform presentation was delivered by a colleague from a Pittsburgh-based company who has a grant with Professor Furman.

The University of Pittsburgh delegation included the largest number of physical therapists from any institution globally and reflects the international prominence of our vestibular physical therapy and vestibular disorders programs.

The Bárány Society meeting is an ideal forum for presenting our work in this field as the meeting is the largest multidisciplinary, scholarly vestibular medicine event in the world. Our plan is to continue our active research program in the field of vestibular medicine and present our findings at the next biennial meeting of the Bárány Society, which will be held in Shanghai, China, in 2026.
