Undergraduate Minor in Communication Science

Are you pursuing a major outside of Communication Science but interested in exploring the foundations of human communication and communication disorders? The undergraduate minor in Communication Science is designed for students on the Pittsburgh campus who are eager to:

  • Gain exposure to the basic science of human communication
  • Broaden their understanding of speech, language and hearing
  • Develop skillsets that benefit career paths into health care, human services, education and more

Students pursuing the minor are eligible to participate in student clubs and organizations within the Communication Science program and may apply for available paid and unpaid research assistant opportunities.

Program Requirements

Students must complete 15 credits of Communication Science coursework, including:

Core Courses (9 credits)

  • CSD 1230 – Introduction to Speech-Language Pathology (spring)
  • CSD 1232 – Introduction to Audiology (fall)
  • CSD 1021 – Language Development (spring)

Elective Courses

(Choose two (2) for a minimum of 6 credits).

  • CSD 1020 – Nature of Language (fall)
  • CSD 1102 – Introduction to Professional and Clinical Issues in CSD (spring)
  • CSD 1237 – Introduction to Neuroscience of Communication (spring)

To count toward the minor, students must earn a minimum grade of C- in each course.
