Christine Matthews is the Speech Pathology Program Supervisor and the Director of Clinical Education in Speech Pathology at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. She is a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders and is the recipient of the 2015 Rick L. Bollinger Clinician of the Year Award. Matthews is a member of the National VA Speech Pathology Field Advisory Council and led the development of the first set of VHA Clinical Practice Recommendations for Managing Communication and Swallowing Impairments in Patients with Tracheostomies. Matthews has presented nationally on a variety of Dysphagia-related topics and has published in the areas of Dysphagia and Aphasia. She currently serves as a reviewer for a peer-reviewed scientific journal and on several committees for the Veterans Health Administration. Her primary areas of clinical interest include managing the communication and swallowing impairment in patients with tracheostomies on and off the ventilator and in patients with chronic and progressive neurological diseases, particularly ALS.
